What is Equine Facilitated Learning?

Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL), also known as equine assisted therapy, originates from United States and it has been practised since the late 1980s as a recognised form of human self-development and healing.  It is an experiential therapeutic method that sees humans interact with horses from the ground; no prior experience or knowledge of horses is required as EFL encourages and supports people’s growth merely through the horses’ presence.

All that is needed is an open mind…and an open heart.

Horses possess the extraordinary ability not just to listen to humans but also to be able to communicate to us at a deeper level. And they are able to do so very clearly, honestly and free of judgement. This makes the connection with horses a healing and magical journey.

As prey animals, horses rely on their instincts to stay safe and they are therefore highly sensitive to the energy around them. They live in the here and now and respond to what it is perceived in the present moment. They accurately and quickly read our non-verbal communication and are able to assess our true internal state, picking up on any incongruence between our thoughts, emotions, intentions, or absence of them, and our actions.

So when interacting with horses we have the opportunity to receive an immediate, honest and non-judgemental feedback about the way we communicate to others, and the way we affect those around us with our approach.  We are therefore given the chance to improve our communication and intention skills, which is something that can have a huge impact on our everyday lives.

Whilst developing better communication and relationship skills, EFL also encourages self-exploration and authenticity, so that you can discover who you really are and all that you really want and can be. With an increased self-awareness, assertiveness and trust for yourself and for others, you can then build a stronger emotional resilience and also set personal boundaries for yourself. All this will significantly and positively impact your overall wellbeing.

“EFL is an experiential therapeutic method that sees humans interact with horses from the ground; no prior experience or knowledge of horses is required.”
